The Ginger Pig Pickle Pot sits in the quaint Yorkshire Village of Thornton le Dale, just over the moor and through the forest from The Ginger Pig Farm in Levisham.
The Pickle Pot is where you will find Julie and Hester, pickling away to their hearts’ content to keep shelves of The Ginger Pig shops filled with top-notch pickles, preserves and chutneys.
Julie started making chutney for The Ginger Pig in the bakery at Grange Farm, but demand increased and more space was needed, so Tim re-vamped the old butchers’ shop in Thornton le Dale. It’s here we are pickling in our Pickle Pot, creating seasonal preparations for you to enjoy just by popping off the lid of a Ginger Pig jar. All of our chutneys and preserves are handmade in Yorkshire, using freshly picked, local produce, supplemented by a few more exotic ingredients selected by Ginger Pig butcher Tom at Rungis Market near Paris.
The Pickle Pot is also the creative pot where The Ginger Pig's steamed puddings, oatcakes and party nibbles are made (fancy serving your guests scotch quails’ eggs with their drink?).
Introduction to us…
Julie
I’ve worked for the Ginger Pig since 2007, in one of the shops to begin with then in the bakery at Grange Farm. I’ve always had a passion for cooking and creating recipes, and chutneys and preserves were always made at home when I was growing up. My mother’s friends and neighbours would pop round and jars of this and that would be exchanged - complete with the secret recipe. It’s these recipes that have been passed on to me. As a child I spent many an afternoon foraging in hedgerows for berries, and had a few scary moments picking fruit from the top of crab apple trees (the best are always at the top!) - the things you do for a jar of good jelly! Over the years I’ve realised there’s more to chutney than just using up green tomatoes, and love playing with lots of ingredients.
HESTER
My interest in food began at an early age; my father was a keen baker and our house was often filled with the delicious aromas of freshly-baked bread and cakes. I always wanted to be involved, stirring and kneading, and learned the baking basics as a young child. I started off making cakes for The Ginger Pig in Pickering in 2008 – and time has flown, it still seems like yesterday! After a brief stint in the bakery, Julie asked if I would join her in a new venture at Thornton le Dale and we’ve never looked back.
